While there, I gave a presentation titled \u201c55 Years of Star Trek: The Life and Spread of the Original BASIC Fan Game.\u201d As you may guess, this was about early Star Trek fan games, and the one written by Mike Mayfield in 1971 in particular. Mayfield\u2019s game is rather special, both for its sheer ambition and for its absolutely massive spread. Versions of the game have spread to run on practically every computer platform under the sun (and even some video game consoles) right up to today, and its influence deserves celebration. And since I recently picked up some better recording equipment, I decided to give recording it a shot for a Retronauts episode. I hope you\u2019re pleased with the results!

At the same time, a 50-ish minute presentation is not enough to fill the length of a full podcast. Fortunately, friend of the show Brian Clark also attended the event to present on Sega\u2019s R360, an extravagant arcade experience the company debuted around 1991 with much fanfare. Brian did a bunch of research onto the machine\u2019s history last year, pulling from Japanese sources and interviews with Western hardware experts to produce a great YouTube documentary. Watching his presentation gave me the thought of recording a second segment where we talk about that ridiculous device that goes a step beyond \u201cdeluxe cabinet\u201d to something that really could only have come out of Bubble-era Japan. So really, this is like two podcasts for the price of one!

The R360 segment leads this episode off before transitioning to my MAGfest panel.
